On December 11, 2025, the Permanent Missions of Tajikistan and Switzerland co-hosted the regular meeting of the Group of Friends of Water at the United Nations Headquarters. The event gathered Permanent Representatives and water experts to review key water-related developments in 2025 and align collective priorities for 2026.

In his statement, the Permanent Representative of Tajikistan Jonibek Hikmat reaffirmed the country’s strong commitment to collective action on water issues, highlighting the urgency posed by accelerating glacier melt, increasing water scarcity, and widening financing gaps.

The importance of key events in 2026 was also highlighted: the meeting in Dakar in January; the celebration of World Water Day in March in New York; and the 4th Dushanbe Water Conference in May, which will serve as a preparatory meeting for the 2026 UN Water Conference. In addition, the upcoming 2028 UN Water Conference in Tajikistan was noted, emphasizing that all these events collectively provide important opportunities to strengthen global cooperation on water.

On September 25, 2024, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Mr.Sirojiddin Muhriddin took part and made a speech in a High-Level Side Event “United by Water: Securing Our Collective Future Amidst Rising Seas and Melting Glaciers,” initiated by our country.

The event was attended by Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Antigua and Barbuda Mr.Chet Green, Egypt Mr.Badr Abdelatty, Indonesia Ms.Retno Marsudi, Saint Lucia Mr. Alva Baptiste, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Ms.Berris Ekinci, Deputy Secretary-General of the UN Mr.Li Junhua, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization Ms.Celeste Saulo, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, Chair of UN-Water Mr.Alvaro Lario, Special Envoy to the French President for the One Water Summit Ms.Barbara Pompili and others.

Participants noted the importance of this event in highlighting the pressing issues of rapid glacier melting and rising sea levels, which pose substantial economic losses and impact millions of lives. The side-event was recognized as an important stage in preparation for the International Conference Dedicated to Glaciers’ Preservation, scheduled for May 2025 in Dushanbe.

Following the event, the participants reaffirmed the need for glaciers’ preservation measures, sea level rise adaptation strategies, enhanced climate data collection and processing ⁠technology transfer for climate monitoring and financial support for vulnerable countries by partner countries and international organizations.

On June 9, 2024, a meeting of the International Advisory Committee (IAC) of the Dushanbe Water Process was held in advance of the Third High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” 2018-2028.

The meeting was chaired by IAC Co-Chairman Sulton Rahimzoda, Chairman of the State Committee on Investments and State Property Management of the Republic of Tajikistan with participation of permanent members of the IAC and their representatives, invited guests and other interested parties.

Within the framework of the meeting the members of the International Advisory Committee discussed and presented their comments and proposals on finalization of the Final Document of the 3rd Conference on the Water Action Decade Conference, which was presented by the International Consultant on preparation and holding of the Conference Kelly Ann Naylor. An initial draft of the Outcome Document was circulated in May this year to UN Member States, international organizations and other stakeholders.

In early June, after receiving comments and proposals from states and organizations, including members of the International Steering Committee of the Dushanbe Water Process and the Steering Committee of the Group of Friends of Water under the UN and other interested experts, the draft document was finalized.

The first global initiative proposed by the President of the Central Asian Football Association (CAFA), President of the Football Federation of Tajikistan H.E. Mr. Rustam Emomali was adopted by the UN General Assembly.

 

 

 

 

Sport, in particular football, plays a crucial role in promoting health and fostering a healthy lifestyle among humanity. Furthermore, it is an essential tool for promoting communication and fostering mutual understanding between diverse peoples and nations.

Football stands as a globally cherished sport, transcending national borders, language barriers and socio-economic disparities. It serves as a unifying force, bringing together people from all corners of the globe and speaking a universal language of unity.

In this context, on February 10, 2024, His Excellency Mr. Rustam Emomali, President of the Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) and President of the Football Federation of Tajikistan for the first time proposed to the United Nations to recognize the global significance of football and to formally designate it through the adoption of a special resolution by the United Nations General Assembly as “World Football Day”.

In this regard, on May 7, 2024, during the 80th plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the resolution “World Football Day”, which was prepared and facilitated by the Republic of Tajikistan, the Kingdom of Bahrain, and the State of Libya.

Hence, the international community unanimously supported the initiative proposed by His Excellency Mr. Rustam Emomali, President of the Football Federation of the Republic of Tajikistan, to designate World Football Day worldwide.

The resolution is based on initiatives and proposals by UN Member States and recognizes the importance of that major international sporting events should be organized in the spirit of peace, mutual understanding, international cooperation, friendship and tolerance, without discrimination, and that the unifying and conciliative nature of such events should be respected.

The resolution also acknowledges the fundamental role of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association and the important role of regional and national football federations, as well as relevant associations, in promoting the game of football.

The operational part of the resolution encourages all Member States to support sport, including football, in its role as a tool to promote peace, development, the empowerment of women and girls, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, fostering social inclusion, intercultural dialogue and dialogue among civilizations.

The UN General Assembly has also decided to proclaim 25 May as World Football Day, as 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the first-ever international football tournament in history involving all regions as part of the 1924 Summer Olympic Games, held in Paris.

At the same time, the UNGA invites all Members States of the United Nations, members of the specialized agencies and observers of the General Assembly, as well as organizations of the United Nations system, in particular the Division for Inclusive Social Development of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the Secretariat, other international and regional organizations, academia, civil society, the private sector and other relevant stakeholders to observe World Football Day in an appropriate manner and in accordance with national priorities, and to disseminate the advantages of football for all, including through educational and public awareness raising activities.

The adoption of this document once again reaffirms the international community’s recognition of Tajikistan’s exemplary leadership in promoting a healthy lifestyle and fostering international sports cooperation for its global promotion. It demonstrates the international community’s full confidence in our initiatives and actions.

On May 2, 2024, another initiative of the Founder of Peace and National Unity – Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Mr. Emomali Rahmon, the proclamation of the “International Day of the Markhor” through the relevant resolution was adopted unanimously by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

The resolution recognizes the urgent need to address the unprecedented global decline in biodiversity, emphasizing the preservation of the Markhor and its natural habitat as an ecological imperative. The resolution also underscores the significance of international and regional cooperation in conserving the Markhor, recognizing national and regional initiatives already underway.

With the adoption of this resolution, May 24 was declared the International Day of the Markhor.

It also takes note of the upcoming, Ninth World Conference on Mountain Ungulates, to be held in Dushanbe from 12 to 15 October 2024.

The Markhor (Capra falconeri) is an iconic and ecologically significant species found across the mountainous regions of Central Asia and South Asia, including Tajikistan, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The Markhor plays a crucial role in ecosystems, biodiversity, and tourism of the local economies, and understanding its conservation at the global level is important, considering that this species is on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

On March 22, 2024, on the margins of the High-level event “World Water Day 2024”, the delegations of the Co-Chair countries of the UN 2023 Water Conference, headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Water Resources of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, met again at the venue of last year’s conference and noted the importance of successful bilateral cooperation at the last year’s historic event.

During the meeting, the heads of the two delegations stressed the need to continue advocating for the urgent implementation of the Water Action Agenda and the voluntary commitments of last year’s conference.

At the end of the meeting the heads of delegations and their teams took a collective photo.

On March 22, 2024, on the sidelines of the High-level Event “Celebrating World Water Day 2024: Converging Efforts, Keeping the Momentum of Progress” in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin met with the President of the 78th session of UN General Assembly, Mr. Dennis Francis.

During the meeting, the interlocutors discussed the current situation and prospects for the development of cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations and exchanged views on the main priorities of the President of the UNGA, issues related to water and climate, international security and upcoming high-level events.

The parties also focused on the 3rd High-level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028” (June 10-13, 2024, Dushanbe). The Minister of Foreign Affairs invited Mr. Dennis Francis to participate in the 3rd Dushanbe Water Conference.

The President of the 78th session of the UNGA highly appreciated the country’s contribution to the promotion of water-related issues and expressed his gratitude for conducting this event and invitation to take part in the Dushanbe Water Conference.

On March 22, 2024, on the sidelines of the high-level event entitled “Celebrating World Water Day 2024: Joining forces, maintaining the dynamics of progress” in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin met with the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Mr. Li Junhua.

During the meeting, the sides discussed the issue of water and climate, the significance of the Dushanbe Water Process, joint actions towards achieving of Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the need to activate existing cooperation tools and expand activities on water and climate related issue.

The interlocutors also discussed in detail the organizational issues of the 3rd High-Level International Conference on the International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028” (to be held on 10-13 June 2024, Dushanbe). The Head of UNDESA expressed his gratitude for the successful long-term cooperation and emphasized the willingness of his Department to continue this relationship.

On March 22, 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin participated in the second part of the High-level Event “Celebrating World Water Day 2024: Converging Efforts, Keeping the Momentum of Progress” and delivered a statement in the section entitled “Cross-Sectoral Cooperation and Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships: Catalyzing Innovation and Ensuring Water for All”.

During his speech, the Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized the importance of the role of global water initiatives of the Government of Tajikistan, holding a series of high-level international events within the framework of the Dushanbe Water Process, contributing to the development of water issues at various levels, including in the mentioned 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Furthermore, it was noted that the decisions of the Republic of Tajikistan in water issues and organization of high-level international events in this area have made a valuable contribution to uniting the world in addressing water issues, provided a good opportunity to consider actions and strengthen cooperation to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda.

The participants were also informed about holding the 3rd High-Level International Conference within the framework of the International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028”, which aims to provide a platform for monitoring, promoting, and supporting the implementation of voluntary commitments made at the UN Water Conference in 2023.

In the closing part of the event the representatives of Germany, Saudi Arabia, Mali, Russia, USA and others, assessed the important role of Tajikistan in the implementation of the World Water Program and expressed readiness for cooperation within the Dushanbe Water Process.
