Fourth stage of Refereeing Unification project held in Tashkent
The WKF Refereeing Unification project reached its fourth stage in Tashkent (Uzbekistan). On the occasion of the 2022 AKF Karate Championships, the WKF’s working group in charge of the Judging Standardisation project travelled to Tashkent to develop the programme among the WKF referees in Asia.

Headed by WKF Referee Commission chairman Javier Escalante and with project leaders Fariba Madani (WKF Referee Commission Secretary) and Natalia Dajcman (WKF Referee Commission Assistant Secretary) in attendance, the working group aims at unifying all the refereeing procedures of the WKF competitions, from the registration of judges and referee course to the application of rules during the competition.

The project was initiated in May in Gaziantep (Türkiye) during the 2022 EKF Senior Championships. The second stage took place in Mexico where the 2022 PKF Cadet, Junior & U21 Championships were held and continued in Durban (South Africa) for the 2022 UFAK Championships.

WKF President Antonio Espinós said:

“The Refereeing Unification project is one of the most ambitious initiatives implemented by the WKF this year. We hope to achieve a complete standardisation of the judging procedures which will instantly raise the bar of our events even more.

“I want to thank WKF Referee Commission chairman Javier Escalante and his team for the outstanding effort and the successful implementation of the project in major WKF events throughout the year.”

WKF finalist in Peace and Sport Awards

The World Karate Federation finished among the top three organisations in the category of “Institution of the Year” at the Peace and Sport Awards.

Presented in a gala celebrated Wednesday in Monaco, the Peace and Sport Awards recognise the most relevant initiatives of the year in sports and social issues.

The WKF was represented at the gala by the WKF CEO Sara Wolff. “We feel privileged to have received this nomination when we have just started the journey of our Guardian Girls Global Karate project. It gives us the motivation to continue working on this project and further develop the programme to empower women even more,” she said.

Karate’s international governing body was nominated for the first time ever for the “Guardian Girls Global Karate programme”, a worldwide social project that aims to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment to defend themselves from all forms of Gender-Based Violence through Karate training.

The WKF competed for the “Institution of the Year” award against the Birmingham City Council and the National Olympic Committee of Denmark.

WKF President Antonio Espinós said:

“It is a tremendous honour for us to be nominated for the Peace and Sport Awards. It represents the confirmation that our efforts to implement initiatives to promote a better world through the social contribution of Karate are going in the right direction.

“On behalf of the Karate family, I would like to congratulate the winner, the Birmingham City Council. The nomination to the Guardian Girls Global Karate project which we have launched together with the Koyamada International Foundation and the United Nations Population Fund is the incentive we need to continue with our objectives and potentially present our project again in future editions of the awards.

WKF organises online webinar to review new competition rules
The World Karate Federation hosted an online webinar to share the new competition rules with the WKF’s refereeing body.

Presented in two sessions to best fit different time zones, the webinar is headed by the WKF Referee Commission chairman Javier Escalante and had WKF President Antonio Espinós in attendance.

Over 600 referees and representatives of the judging bodies of National Federations are participating in the two sessions of the webinar. The activity aimed at showcasing and analysing the new competition rules to be effective in all the WKF international events starting January 2023.

Among the new rules to be implemented next year, the transition of two lines of penalties to one single line of sanctions in Kumite, as well as the application of an electronic scoring system by joysticks in Kumite to replace the current flag system were highlighted at the webinar.

The modification of the number of judges to be considered for the Kata scores, from 5 of 7 instead of 3 of 7, the use of karate gis with red and blue embroidery on the shoulders in all the WKF events, and the introduction of the WKF approved helmet in U14 categories are also among the new rules to be detailed at the webinars.

WKF President Antonio Espinós said:

“The WKF is continuously improving its structures to maintain the status of Karate as one of the most innovative disciplines in the world.

“I am sure that these webinars will help the karate community to get familiar with the updates in the competition rules. We are convinced that these modifications will contribute to taking Karate to new heights in terms of consistency, equanimity, and sporting spirit.

“I want to thank WKF Referee Commission chairman Javier Escalante for his invaluable contribution and his outstanding support to the success of these initiatives. His relentless commitment and cooperation are crucial to the progress of our sport.”

Among the topics on the agenda were extending the progress of Karate in Pan America and a review of PKF’s main events for 2023, including the PKF Senior Championships to be held in San Jose (Costa Rica) in May 2023, the PKF Cadet, Junior & U21 Championships to take place in Santiago (Chile) in August 2023, and the Pan American Games to be held in Santiago (Chile) in November 2023.

WKF President Antonio Espinós said:

“It has been a pleasure to receive José and Tony in the WKF office in Madrid. At today’s meeting, we were able to discuss how much Karate has developed in the Americas over the years. There is still a lot of room for improvement, of course, but I am pleased to receive positive feedback on the promising prospects of Karate in the continent.

“I have encouraged Mr García Maañón and Mr Méndez to not be complacent and continue making their utmost to ensure that our sport keeps on growing all over the Americas. I want to express my gratitude to Mr García Maañón and Mr Méndez for their efforts, their support and for taking the time to visit our headquarters today.”
